(Why Harder Isn’t Always Better)

At first glance, they seem closely related. After all, more rules should create harder puzzles, right? More systems should create deeper challenges. More mechanics should create more interesting gameplay.

Sometimes that’s true, but often it isn’t. In fact, many puzzle games become less enjoyable as they become more complex. Players don’t quit because the puzzles are too difficult. They quit because the puzzles become exhausting.

Understanding the difference between difficulty and complexity is one of the most valuable skills a puzzle designer can develop.


What Is Complexity?

Complexity refers to the amount of information a player must understand. Every rule increases complexity. Every mechanic increases complexity. Every interaction between systems increases complexity.

Imagine a puzzle that requires players to understand:

  • moving platforms
  • colored doors
  • pressure plates
  • rotating bridges
  • time manipulation

Even before solving the puzzle, the player must learn how all those systems work. That’s complexity. Complexity is about knowledge.

Instead of feeling smarter, players feel burdened. The game becomes work. And work is rarely what players are looking for when they sit down to enjoy a puzzle game.

Players enjoy saying:

They don’t enjoy saying:

“I forgot rule number seventeen.”

One reaction creates satisfaction. The other creates frustration.

If a mechanic encourages players to think differently, it may be worth the cost. If it simply adds more information to track, it may not be. The strongest puzzles often emerge when a single mechanic is explored deeply rather than when many mechanics are combined superficially.


Complexity Has a Place

None of this means complexity is bad. Many great games depend on it. Strategy games. Simulation games. Management games. Role-playing games.

These genres often thrive on layered systems. The important point is that complexity should serve a purpose. It should create meaningful decisions. It should expand possibilities. It should support the experience.

Complexity should not exist simply because the designer wanted the game to feel bigger. More rules do not automatically create better gameplay.


A Useful Design Test

When evaluating a puzzle, try asking a simple question:

If I removed one mechanic, would the puzzle become worse?

If the answer is no, that mechanic may not be pulling its weight. Strong puzzle design often comes from refinement rather than addition. Removing unnecessary elements helps players focus on what matters.

Clarity makes good ideas shine. And clarity is frequently more valuable than complexity.


Final Thought

Difficulty and complexity are closely related, but they are not the same thing. Complexity asks players to learn. Difficulty asks players to think. The most memorable puzzle games strike a balance between the two.

They provide enough complexity to create interesting possibilities, but not so much that players become overwhelmed. They challenge players without confusing them. And most importantly, they create moments of insight.

Because in the end, players rarely remember how many mechanics a puzzle contained. They remember the moment when everything suddenly clicked. That’s the feeling great puzzle design is built upon.
