Quick Firewall Control from the System Tray

Once NovaWright Firewall Monitor is running, its icon appears in the Windows system tray. A quick left-click gives you immediate control.

When the Firewall Is Fully On

Left-clicking the tray icon temporarily turns the firewall off for the default duration configured in Settings.

When the Firewall Is Fully Off

Left-clicking the icon again turns all firewall profiles back on.

When the Firewall Is Partially Off

If some profiles are on while others are off, the application will ask what you want to do.

See Your Firewall Status at a Glance

You don’t have to open the main window just to check what’s happening. Simply hover over the tray icon.

The tooltip can show:

  • current firewall status
  • whether the firewall is fully or partially disabled
  • the active countdown timer

This makes it easy to know what’s happening without interrupting whatever you’re doing.

A Full Set of Timer Options

Right-click the tray icon to access the complete firewall control menu.

You can disable the firewall for:

  • 5 minutes
  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 60 minutes
  • Custom duration

You can also select:

  • Disable until…
  • Add 5 minutes
  • Subtract 5 minutes
  • Pause timer
  • Resume timer
  • Restore Firewall (Emergency)

Disable Until a Specific Date and Time

Sometimes a fixed number of minutes isn’t what you need. For those situations, NovaWright Firewall Monitor includes Disable until…

You can choose a specific date and time when the firewall should automatically be restored. This can be useful when you’re performing a longer troubleshooting session or working with software that requires the firewall to remain temporarily disabled.

Custom Disable Durations

You’re not restricted to the preset timer values. Choose Custom duration to enter the number of minutes you need.

For example:

  • 2 minutes
  • 10 minutes
  • 45 minutes
  • 90 minutes
  • or any other duration you require

Once the timer expires, the application restores the firewall according to its previous state.

Add or Subtract Time Without Starting Over

Sometimes you realize that you need a few more minutes. You don’t have to disable the firewall again.

From the tray menu, simply choose:

Add 5 minutes

Need less time instead?

Choose:

Subtract 5 minutes

You can adjust the active countdown while you’re working.

Pause and Resume the Timer

Need to temporarily stop the countdown? NovaWright Firewall Monitor lets you Pause the timer. When you’re ready to continue, choose Resume.

This can be useful when your testing or troubleshooting gets interrupted and you don’t want the timer continuing to run while you’re away.

The Main Window

The main window provides a more detailed view of your firewall configuration.

Three cards display the status of:

  • Domain
  • Private
  • Public

Each profile clearly shows whether it is currently On or Off.

Control Individual Firewall Profiles

You don’t always need to turn off the entire firewall. That’s why each firewall profile can be controlled individually.

The Turn off button under a profile temporarily disables that specific profile and starts its own timer. The Turn on button immediately restores that profile.

This gives you more precise control when troubleshooting.

For example, you may only need to temporarily disable the Private profile while leaving the Domain and Public profiles enabled.

Disable All Profiles

The main window includes a:

Disable (Default) button. This temporarily disables all firewall profiles using the default duration configured in Settings.

There’s also a:

Disable until… option for choosing a specific restoration date and time.

And if you need complete control over the duration:

Custom duration allows you to enter the exact number of minutes you need.

Restore the Previous Firewall State

One of the important features of NovaWright Firewall Monitor is its ability to remember the firewall state before a full disable. When the timer expires, the application restores that previous state. This is important because not every computer necessarily has all three firewall profiles configured the same way.

If a profile was already disabled before you started, the application can preserve that state rather than blindly turning everything on.

Emergency Enable

Sometimes you don’t want to wait for the timer. Maybe you’ve finished testing. Maybe you’ve connected to a different network. Or perhaps you simply want your firewall protection restored immediately.

NovaWright Firewall Monitor includes Emergency Enable. From the main window, this forces all firewall profiles back on immediately.

The system tray also includes:

Restore Firewall (Emergency) so you can restore protection without opening the main window.

Built-In Safety Warnings

Disabling a firewall is not something that should be done casually. NovaWright Firewall Monitor therefore includes several features designed to help prevent accidental or unnecessarily long firewall disables.

Public Network Warning

The Public firewall profile deserves particular attention.

When you’re connected to a public network, such as Wi-Fi at a coffee shop, hotel, airport, library, restaurant, or other public location, turning off the Public firewall profile can significantly reduce your protection. NovaWright Firewall Monitor warns you when you’re taking this step.

Be especially careful when disabling the firewall on a Public network.

Countdown Notifications

It can be easy to become focused on whatever you’re testing and forget about the firewall timer. NovaWright Firewall Monitor can provide warning notifications as the timer approaches expiration.

Warnings can occur at:

  • 5 minutes remaining
  • 1 minute remaining
  • 30 seconds remaining

This gives you an opportunity to finish what you’re doing or extend the timer if necessary.

Confirmation Before Long Disables

You can also enable confirmation before longer firewall disables. This adds another opportunity to stop and reconsider before leaving the firewall disabled for an extended period.

Detect Changes Made Outside the Application

NovaWright Firewall Monitor doesn’t only keep track of changes made through its own controls. If the firewall state changes elsewhere in Windows, the application can detect the change.

For example, a change made through Windows Security can appear in the application’s history as:

Firewall History

The application maintains a history of firewall-related activity.

This can help you understand:

  • when the firewall was restored

Diagnostics

When you need more information than a simple On/Off status, open Diagnostics.

Diagnostics provides additional information such as:

  • current firewall status
  • active network type
  • firewall rule counts
  • firewall history

This gives you a better picture of what Windows Firewall is actually doing.
